What is Gastro Psychology? Why should I see a gut-focused therapist or coach?

Gastro Psychology, or gut-brain psychology, examines the connection between mental health and digestive function, focusing on how stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being can impact gastrointestinal health and vice versa. This approach recognizes the bidirectional communication between the gut and brain, affecting overall health.

A gut-focused therapist or coach offers an integrated approach to addressing both psychological and digestive health. They provide personalized support to manage stress and emotional factors contributing to GI symptoms, using techniques like cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness. This holistic approach can help improve symptoms of conditions such as IBS and enhance overall well-being by addressing the gut-brain connection.

What is the difference between psychotherapy and coaching?

Coaching and psychotherapy offer different approaches to managing gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Coaching is typically more goal-oriented and focuses on helping individuals make lifestyle changes, develop coping strategies, and achieve specific personal or health-related goals. A gut-focused coach may provide guidance on stress management, dietary adjustments, and overall wellness practices to improve GI health.

Psychotherapy, on the other hand, delves deeper into the psychological aspects of GI disorders. It involves exploring underlying emotional and cognitive issues, such as anxiety, trauma, or chronic stress, that may be contributing to digestive problems. A psychotherapist uses various therapeutic techniques to address these issues, helping individuals gain insight and develop strategies to manage symptoms more effectively.

How can Clinical Hypnosis help my GI disorder?

Clinical hypnosis can aid in managing gastrointestinal (GI) disorders by promoting deep relaxation and focused attention, which helps reduce stress and anxiety—common triggers for GI symptoms. Through guided relaxation and suggestion, hypnosis can improve gut function by influencing the autonomic nervous system, potentially reducing symptoms like pain, bloating, and discomfort. It also supports positive behavior changes, such as healthier eating habits and better stress management, complementing traditional treatments and enhancing overall well-being.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance.

I have chosen to forgo joining insurance panels for several reasons with you in mind: Choice of therapist, flexibility, and confidentiality.

Insurance companies frequently impose session limits, dictate specific therapy approaches, or decline coverage for certain therapies. Additionally, they often mandate a diagnosis and create records that might affect your future, such as limiting options for life insurance.

Paying out-of-pocket allows you to choose a therapist who fits your needs, focus on the specific areas you want to work on, and move forward at your own speed—all while maintaining confidentiality.

For these reasons, I operate as an out-of-network psychotherapy provider. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, I will furnish you with a ‘Superbill’ for reimbursement.

You may receive up to 50-80% reimbursement after your out-of-network deductible has been met (PPO plans generally have the highest reimbursement rates for out-of-network providers)
